Guardians

The guardians at C & H Livestock consist of livestock guardian dogs, llamas and donkeys.

This picture is of Hoss (1/2 Anatolian 1/2 Pyr) and Beau (Full Pyr).

"Hoss" is a 2002 Anatolian x Great Pyrenees bred by Ann Giardini of Axtell TX and a gift from Round Bottom Ranch. His sire was full Anatolian bred by Round Bottom Ranch, Gene & Tina Blackwell Heavener OK. Hoss is intact and a very large dog. Hoss is about 10 months and Beau is about 3 years old. "Beau" is a Great Pyrenees neutered male. Beau came to me as a rescue from the Leander Animal Shelter in 2002; they aged him at around a year to two. He has turned out to be the best guardian. I have actually captured on camera his capture of a coyote. He is the dog that takes the lead in any chase of coyotes. He is a very gentle dog and will come for petting and a bit of love.

The llamas arrived as pets in 1998 from James and Mary Nell Doyle of Mariko Llamas, Krum TX.

This is Billboard Hit

Billboard Hit aka "Hit" is a '97 paint gelded male. He is registered with the International Lama Registry and micro chipped. His sire is Warbonnet SBF and his dam is Night-Light. Hit loves the baby goats and will encourage or tempt them to climb on him all the time. He is very attentive to the goats. He is heavy coated so needs clipping in the summer. He also loves to spend time in the pond to cool off. I have witnessed the goats surround him when the LGDs give a warning bark. He is the protector while the dogs go after any aggressor.

This is Touchstone Mist

Sir Touchstone Mist aka 'Touch" is a silver gray '97 gelded male. He is registered with International Lama Registry and micro chipped. His sire is MW Stellar and his dam is Tiplea Mist out of Kesling's Chilean Legacy. Touch is super with humans and has been featured at petting zoos at the local schools and nursing home. He does guard goats but doesn't care for the sheep. He loves to be petted and will great anyone that comes into his pasture. He is light coated so needs minimal clipping in the summer.

The Livestock Guardian Dogs are all working Great Pyrenees, Anatolians or a cross of the two breeds.

"Glory" is a 2000 AKC Great Pyrenees bred by Lazy J Goat Farm, Judy & Dave Muska. Glory is a spayed female and a very pretty and sweet dog. She elects to usually stay up and guard the animals near the barns. AKC Reg. Great Pyr from DOB:09/01/00 Pictured at 8 months   Hit & Glory, yes llamas and dogs do get along if properly introduced...but llamas won't let other dogs in.

Here is Pearl. "Pearl" is a 2000 Anatolian x Great Pyrenees bred by Coni Ross, CR Ranch, Blanco TX. Pearl is the lead female. She is spayed. She is the top dog on the farm. No one does anything until Pearl says it is okay and that is from food to guarding.

"Babs" is a 2002 Anatolian spayed female. She came from a big ranch in South Texas. She is not friendly and has to be trapped for annual shots. She doesn't put up with much and takes her guarding very seriously.

Sometimes everyone needs help reaching that just right spot to scratch!
Not pictured:

"Tina" is a 2003 Anatolian spayed female bred by Round Bottom Ranch, Gene & Tina Blackwell Heavener OK. She was given to me to protect the sheep, as the other guardian dogs prefer the goats. She has done a great job but now prefers the goats as well.

"Missy" is a 2003 Anatolian spayed female rescued by Gene Blackwell and given to us to help with sheep predation problems. She is very protective of her charges and a very sweet natured dog.

The donkeys are new to the operation. I'm not sure how much guarding they do but they do get along with the llamas and LGDs. They are: Simon the jack, Reba and Blaze are the Jennies. Jenny is Blaze and Simon foal from 2005.
